Provincial Council Elections

- The government dissolved the Western province council prematurely on January 29
- Nominations were called from February 19,2009 to 12.00 noon February 26,2009.
- Voters are expected to elect 102 members from the Colombo(43),Kalutara(20) and Gampaha(39) districts.
- Fourteen political parties and 23 independent groups were fielding 2,048 candidates
- The UNP's Colombo district list is headed by former councilor Lakshman Abeygunaratna. Its Gampaha leader are Lawrence Madiwela and Kalutara leader Kithsiri Kahatapitiya.
- The UPFA's Colombo district list is headed by former councilor Sunil Jayamini while the Gampaha District leader is former Provincial Minister Prasanna Ranatunga.
and Kalutara district list is former Chief Minister Reginold Cooray.
- The Colombo district JVP list is headed by Duminda Nagamuwa, Gampaha by Waruna Rajapaksa and Kalutara by Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa.
- In Kalutara nominations tendered by Sinhale Mahaasammata Bhoomiputhra Pakshaya and United National Alliance and an independent group were rejected.
- In Gampaha, nominations lists of Eksath Lanka Prajathantra Peramuna, Deshapremi Jathika Peramuna, Sri Lanka Prajathantravadi Peramuna and one independent group were rejected.
- There are 3,820,214 registered voters in the Western Province.
